‘Polski’ Donates Corvette to Orphanage

June 5, 2002 02:21 PM

Orphans at the Nine of Clubs Home for Boys in Queens, New York were delighted last week, when television star Daniel Dance (of Dutch & Polski fame) surprised them with an unexpected gift.

Mr. Dance, owner of seven vintage Corvette’s, drove his fully-restored Astro II-XP-880 into the playground, and handed over the keys to Headmaster Santos Gossier.

Most of the orphans at Nine of Clubs are from Sri Lanka, but the language barrier did not quell their youthful exuberance. Shrieks of “Car!” and “TV!” rang out as the boys climbed in the bucket seats and through the sunroof. “I figured one for every day of the week was a bit much,” quipped the TV cop, as cameras swarmed around.

Headmaster Gossier was visiby shaken by the experience, and became weak from crying hysterically. At one point he fell to the ground, hyperventilating. In a flash, the actor/director rushed to his aid. The headmaster came to, muttering “The angel has come… I am so blessed.”

Though not called Corvette, the one-off Astro II of 1968 fueled rumors that a mid-engine Chevy sports car was near. Developed as GM project XP-880, it was a follow-up to the previous year's Corvair-based Astro I, but carried a Corvette V-8 and conventional doors.
